When
Varamahalakshmi Vrata is observed on the Friday before the full moon in Shravana month. It is kept chiefly by married women, for the wellbeing and prosperity of the family.
The kalasha as Lakshmi
The distinctive element is the alankara: a kalasha is filled with rice or water, topped with a coconut and mango leaves, and dressed as the Goddess with a saree, a mukhavarna (metal face), and the family's jewellery. It becomes the focus of worship for the day.
The rite
Ashtottara (108 names) or Sahasranama (1000 names) archana is offered. The vrata katha is read. A dora — a nine-strand turmeric-dyed thread with nine knots — is worshipped and then tied on the right wrist. Naivedya of payasam and five preparations is offered.
Tamboola
Sumangalis are invited and given tamboola — betel leaves, betel nuts, a blouse piece, bangles, kumkum and fruit. This exchange is considered an essential part of the observance.
Preparing
Keep a silver or copper kalasha, a new saree to drape it, and the family jewellery. Fast until the pooja concludes. Prepare payasam and the naivedya items in advance so the morning is free.
